From the Executive Director, Carri Uram:
“The Special Link was born out of tragedy. We had waited for our baby John Jacob Uram (born in November of 1992) for so long. He was perfect! His older siblings (Chad and Tiffany) were so proud to have him as a little brother, and they loved all the duties that came with helping mom take care of him. Baby “John-John” received a lot of love in his short 2 months of life before he was taken from us too quickly. The cause was Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It was an excruciating time for all of us, but we trusted that God had a plan for us. We will always miss John, but one day we will be reunited in Heaven!
God did have an amazing and wonderful plan! Around a year after the death of John, it was placed on our hearts to adopt a baby. Within months we were bringing home a precious little boy that we named Alexander James (Alex) Uram. What a time of rejoicing it was for our family! It seemed appropriate that Alex was born just before Easter in 1994, because that year, our family experienced a resurrection. God had restored our hearts and filled our arms with a wonderful baby boy!
Adoption was such a blessing that we adopted another miracle in late summer of 1995. Natalie completed our family. She was-and still is-the icing on our cake. God proved that He is faithful to those who trust Him through their darkest hours. He IS the God of miracles!
Very soon our family began advocating for adoption, and in particular, the adoption of minority or special needs infants and children. Our story was shared in newspapers, TV news and even the 700 Club TV program. Within a short time, people from all over the U.S. were contacting us asking how they could adopt. Also, attorneys and adoption agencies were calling asking if we knew of families waiting to adopt. Sitting at my kitchen table, I was helping to bring together these adoption sources and ready families. Thus, the special “link” began.
The Special Link, Inc. is now a Child Placing Agency licensed by the State of South Carolina. We have helped to make hundreds of matches in these few shorts years of service. It is a privilege to play a small role in watching someone else’s life restored by God.”
