Myths and Truths About Biracial  Children and Adoption

Myth: Biracial children grow up dysfunctional.

Truth: A 1984 Poussaint Study of biracial college students founts found that "as a group, they were psychologically well-adjusted, very competent, and very comfortable with their biracial identifies."


Myth: Black and biracial adolescents adopted transracially don't have a clear racial identity.

Truth: In an extensive 20-year study, 90-98% of transracial adoptees report having a strong sense of racial pride.


Myth: Extended family members will never accept a child from another rance.

Truth: Research indicates that even the most vocal relative quickly grows to love and accept the child(ren).


Myth: No one wants (black or biracial) children.

Truth: Attorneys and adoption agencies across the  country report that more and more families are realizing the joys and blessings of adopting black and biracial children.
